When we mailed out our 2019 Annual Appeal letter just a few months ago, my opening statement was this:
“I need your help! When I took over as the Board President, my speeches always included the plea to ‘put us out of business.’ Simply put, if Meals With A Mission were no longer needed, it means we have eliminated hunger.”
Well, while we continue to try to eliminate hunger, we are now faced with bigger issues. Our friends, family, and neighbors are now being told to hunker down, stay home, and “STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE.” Those family members, friends, and neighbors are now facing illness, job loss, and loss of socialization.
For the safety of our volunteers, we have temporarily dispensed with the actual cooking of meals at our kitchen, but we are pleased to report that we will continue to provide frozen and fresh food and non-perishable staples to our clients for preparation of meals on their premises. We consistently review the government mandates and are committed to being back in full service as soon as possible.
We write this letter at a time of critical circumstances and unforeseen challenges. The one challenge we can predict is that the need for our meals will be greater and finances even tighter for the food-insecure individuals and families who are already enduring great hardship.
As you know, gatherings nationwide are banned for the foreseeable future. MWAM had to postpone two major annual events that would have provided crucial funding for our work. Although we are temporarily providing provisions as opposed to prepared meals, we still have substantial overhead expenses for rent, utilities, insurance and maintenance. This is why your donation at this particular time is even more significant in supporting our mission, Catering to the Needs of Others.
With this appeal letter, we are replacing an important annual fundraiser with a Virtual Comedy Night in lieu of our original March 28th event. Please note that all donation options are available on our donate page.
EMPTY CHAIR DINNER: Since we could not get together for the planned Comedy Night, a great night of social interaction, I am inviting you to participate in our Empty Chair Dinner. Just purchase a chair(s) at $25 each for an intimate dinner, or reserve a table of ten at the extremely favorable cost of $200. You can donate to MWAM and enjoy your meal in the comfort of your home. Once you purchase your tickets, you need to create your family’s favorite meal, open up that expensive bottle of wine, sit down with your family, toast MWAM and have a great time!!!! You do not have to listen to any stuffy speeches…..just ENJOY your meal with those who are close to you.
Meals With A Mission has reached a significant milestone of over 1,250,000 meals provided since its founding in 2010. Each month we provide an average of 20,000 meals to 25 agencies in northern New Jersey. We are so grateful to you, our Meals With a Mission family, for all your support in recent weeks. Our volunteers have cooked and packaged thousands of meals in an incredibly short time in order to meet our commitment to the agencies we serve.
While we are saddened to witness the growing critical need in our communities, we are gratified to be able to provide hope and a nourishing meal to thousands in northern New Jersey. You, our dedicated volunteers and benefactors, make this possible. We need your continued support and thank you for caring and sharing in the work of our mission.
